I actually bought this pan to protect my carpet from possible leaks from a Christmas tree holder that contains about a quart of water. Since most people will be buying it for their water heaters, here are a couple of pointers: - Plastic pans can be used for ELECTRIC water heaters ONLY. - Ensure that the pan diameter exceeds the diameter of the water heater by a comfortable margin. - Ensure the pan itself will fit in the alcove, shelf, etc where the water heater resides. - Check local building codes before installing any water pan drain plumbingThis last issue can be confusing. A change in the national plumbing codes in 2006 effectively eliminates the use of standard schedule 40 PVC cold water piping (the easiest and cheapest alternative). But not all local municipalities follow the UPC completely. Although PVC pipe is rated for cold water only (78 F maximum), the infrequency of an actual hot water leaking emergency will likely not result in a failure of either the pipe or the glued fittings. Some municipalities are allowing PVC for water heater drains, so check with your local building department before installing drain plumbing. CPVC is OK, but it's more expensive, a bit harder to find (try Lowes) and you must use CPVC fittings. Copper (or any approved hot drinking water pipe material) is also allowed if you're handy with a solder torch. The pipe or hose should be 1" diameter to keep up with a typical water heater failure (which by the way is almost never a huge flood but rather a moderate flow that a 1" gravity pipe will handle). Ironically, the pan comes with a PVC fitting. Depending on the anal retentiveness of your local building inspector, this may have to be replaced when drain plumbing is installed. Perhaps readers can respond on their recent experiences with installation of water heater drain plumbing and code inspections.

This water heater pan is pretty simple. You place the plastic pan where the water heater will eventually sit, plumb in the drain connection and set the water heater in the pan. The description says that the pan is white but it is BLACK. The product description also says that the pan is 24" in diameter but be aware that the lip on the pan increases the overall diameter to 25". Can be a problem in very tight spaces. The only drawback is that the drain fitting is 1" PVC so I had to find an adapter to reduce it to 3/4" PVC. I would NOT recommend using this with a gas water heater!

I actually didn't buy this as a water heater pan. I don't think plastic is allowed per code where I live. I bought it as a concrete mold to make a large round paver. Worked GREAT for this. Blue painter tape over the hole, inside and out, Quick spray w/ some PAM then in w/ the cement. Made a very nice paver once cured (~24 hours). Saving it to use for this purpose again in the future. Took 2 - 50# bags to fill it, fyi.

Is exactly what I wanted. I am using it for a herb pot holder for different little pots. So any over flow will not harm Apartment. Only issue is got lost in mail. But Amazon made it more than Right when it popped up a month late. Who cares why it got lost. Only thing that has ever not showed up. It is plastic and light weight. But a heater over flow or leak. Well everyone should have this. Stop a floor from rotting from drip or else. Good stuff.

Great item for many other uses. I'm using one of these in the garden under 1/2 Oak barrel containers ... makes then easy to slide around. Also using another on my deck for my puppy's pee spot. I put pee pads on the pan and because this pan has borders she always pees on pad within the ring, especially when she knows a treat follows. Easy to rinse out too and no damage to the deck. I've also used them as forms to make large round stepping stones with concrete and glass tile inlays. Probably make a great form to make small table tops out of concrete too. Endless ideas ....

Perfect pan to set my hydroponic garden on in our kitchen to protect the floor from leaks.

I have been watering vegetable plants growing in clay pots. I put the clay pots in here and keep some water in this pan so they don't dry out. I have several for this purpose.
