Q: can any can of cat litter pellets be used

I'm using Feline Pine pellets, they work GREAT in the Tidy Cat Breeze box! The sawdust falls through the grate onto the pad, as long as you check daily and dump sawdust, this is very neat, easy, no smell. If the cat digs a hole that is a little too large, pee is caught by the pad, so no problem there either. This would not be a good box if your cat has loose stools, but for normal cat stools, it's a great system. I am hanging onto a regular box and a box of clumping clay litter for any "emergency" stool problems. The drawer for the regular sized Breeze box can easily be shaken into a 13 gallon kitchen size trash can. The drawer for the XL, though it uses the same size pads, is to large to directly shake into a kitchen can. There, I lift the 4 corners of the pee pad, carry it to the trash (carefully) and then let a corner fall open, dumping the sawdust from the pad into the trash. Then the pee pad goes back in the drawer. Even after a week, the pee pad doesn't stink, but it probably would eventually from contact with the damp sawdust and the fact that sometimes some pee gets directly through when a cat digs a hole. I just find it easiest to replace the pee pad weekly in each box and know that there's no smell for my cats to be upset about. It is, however, in my opinion, important to follow the box for each cat +1 rule! Because when they poo, they don't always bury it completely in the pellets, and because the pellets are larger, even if they do a good job of covering it, the poo doesn't always get coated in them and will smell some. Which means you should scoop poo ASAP as cats *hate* to have to go back to a stinky box. Providing that +1 box gives the cats an option to do their number two and not have to step in it or work around it until you are able to scoop.

Q: Have any of you ever reused/washed the pellets? I'm thinking about taking them out once a week and rinsing them in hot water to keep the box pristine!

Yes, and it works. However, you aren't just "washing" them to clean them but you need to "recharge" them since they absorb the ammonia smell. The information is online for recharging Zeolite pellets but I soak mine in a salt solution for 24-48 hours, rinse, then spread out to dry in the sun. I lose about 5% a week to attrition (due to scooping) but recharging them saves a lot of money.

Q: Has anyone had a problem with the urine smell? I love the litter box, but the smell is terrible! Solutions?

I have been using Pine pellets a 40 lb bag from my local feed store $8, it's used for horse bedding, but works perfectly for litter. NO urine smell and the urine turns the wood pellets to sawdust which slips thru the slats onto the pad (sometimes if I find white sawdust at the top I just shake the box a bit and it falls thru, the scooper run thru the litter a few times also does the trick) . Don't need much of the pellets maybe about a 1/2 " deep, because the pellets take care of the urine which with other litters clumps and has to be scooped out. Love this system don't love the mineral pellets the company give you when you buy the litter box. Good luck

Q: this is just a starter kit?

I love this litter box - though I wish I'd waited to buy it after the released the model with the hood. A few caveats. I don't know how anyone could swap pads just twice a week. I have two cats and 3 litter boxes - 2 breezes and one traditional with a hood. I change pads every 2 days. The boys alternate which box they pee more in, but in 2 days, one pad is full and the other is well on its way. To save money, I just buy a 100-count box of the smallest sized puppy training pads (I think they are like 22x22") and cut one fold's width from the length. Then I fold over the extra width and slide the tray back in. The over-sized pad just means it absorbs that much more before I change it, which is a blessing. And though I have considerably less mess, my cats do kick some of those pellets about. Careful, stepping on one is akin to stepping on a Lego. Mamaaaa!!

Fantastic design

I cancelled my order.

I thought this looked brilliant but I cancelled my order when I realised Amazon didn’t sell the litter refills what’s the point of buying it when you can’t replace the litter, I have always used catsan and now I have discovered catsan smart packs so will stick with that.
