I’d thoroughly recommend this, to friends and enemies alike.

Does the idea of threading a needle while wearing boxing gloves appeal to you?Ever fancied learning how to knit socks for a spider?Does bending tiny bits of steel into boxes no bigger than a pin-head (not kidding), sound like a good time?Do you lie awake at night wishing you could spend hour upon painstaking hour bending and twisting metal tabs the size of a pixies freckles? Is folding slivers of metal no bigger than a pencil line your idea of fun?Oh, it is? Really? .... Well then fellow masochists, please read on.Ok so full disclosure. This is the first time I’ve had a go at one of these metal kits. I’m fifty. My eyesight isn’t what it once was. I’ve spent years abusing my body through working in heavy industry and living. By this point I therefore have pretty bad tendinitis, a touch of arthritis, a smidgen of RSI, the attention span of a gnat and my hands are not exactly rock steady any more.. I’m not saying all this to engender sympathy (because I decided long ago that saving my body to impress the undertaker with my healthy corpse sounded pretty self-defeating), but rather to show that despite this, I’ve still been able to complete the kit to a decent-ish finish. So unless you are blind or without hands take heart, because you should be able to make this model. You WILL need a small pair of snips, a set of tweezers and some needle nosed pliers to assemble this model to a good standard. Piececool sell a set of pliers (average) and snips (good), or it’s easy enough to source your own. A bright light source is an absolute must. I used my daughters vivid pink desk lamp, nice! A jewellers loop might also come in handy but I didn’t bother and just squinted like Clint Eastwood a lot.Piececool also sell a set of manipulating tools for curving pieces and securing tabs. I didn’t buy these but instead got on ok with a set of shaping tools improvised from screwdriver shafts, felt tips pens and old nails. I basically raided the garage. I love improvisation, it saves you money and makes bouncing bombs that flood the Ruhr. After finishing this my main advice for another beginner would be to take things nice and easy. Don’t rush. Only snip out the pieces that you need to complete the stage you are working on. Don’t over twist the tabs to the point they snap but don’t undertwist (new word), them so that the parts aren’t secure (After a few twists you’ll get the feel for it). Curve pieces a bit at a time starting shallow and finishing as deep as is required. Identify the printed/inscribed side of the parts before snipping and refer to the manual and online examples as required. You’ve got one shot at bending a lot of these parts so triple check before you commit. Measure a thousand times and cut once kinda thing. The instructions are mostly straightforwards. This is pretty much Ikea flat-pack model making sans the pretentious adverts. Twist this, bend that etc. I will say that I veered from the instructions every now and again when a bend seemed more appropriate than a twist or vice versa for the sake of aesthetics and structural strength, but in the main I followed the plans. One small moan = The main gun turrets are designed to rotate. Although a nice feature the execution doesn’t actually work very well as the tolerances are very tight. I almost fixed them to the deck so they’d remain stationary but in the end decided to go with the instructions. They do rotate (kinda), but doing so scratches the model so I don’t play with them.Oh yeah and there’s a trio of small (AA?) brass guns on the aft deck right near the stern that the instructions tell you to fix facing the superstructure of the ship.... Pretty sure the firing arcs of these guns wouldn’t include the ships own crew so I faced them aft instead. Also the stern ships flag was ignoring the laws of physics and facing into the wind so I changed that as well. You will squint. You might swear. You will curse (This is different to swearing). You will annoy your wife (Depending upon how long you’ve been married this is not necessarily a bad thing because we all need hobbies don’t we?).Your neck will hurt.Your back will ache.Your shoulders will burn.Your eyes will strain.Your fingers will cramp. But at the end of all that you might just end up with an exquisite little model battleship that is sure to impress all of your miniature metal battleship loving friends and family.... Or you could end up with a little pile of scrap and a migraine. Ultimate triumph or complete failure twist by twist. Exciting!Being vexed is certain.Having fun is optional.Upon reflection I should probably have chosen an easier model to begin with and after the first ten minutes I swore that if I ever got through this, I’d never, ever put myself through such torture again and take up more relaxing pursuits like disarming bombs or working with small children. However, upon completing the model (I mean just look at it! It’s awesome!), I’m finding myself looking at other kits........And so it’s the Bismarck next I reckon. The Prince of Wales and the Bismarck; it’ll be just like old times.I’d thoroughly recommend this, to friends and enemies alike.

You'll need a magnifying glass

Rather nice material feel, which is important to me, with sensory issues. The pieces are rather tiny, and you'll need a set of tools like the one they suggest (you can find cheaper toolsets rather quickly-but build quality may be questionable).I find I keep flinging small pieces around when trying to manipulate them, so I may have to think about gloves, too!

Ship build

Found this very relaxing to build. Many of the parts are very very small so a steady hand is definitely required. I would recommend buying to tools to needed to build this as I tried with my own but ended up ordering them afterwards. Did find it very rewarding once finally built. Do have another to build when I have to time as it does take a very long time. My only gripe is the instructions could be a little better labelled as the parts on the cards are not numbered like the paper instructions. All in all though was very pleased. Look forward to starting the next

metal ship model

a lot smaller than it looks like on the advert, found my chubby fingers were too big to make it, and I would say you need to be an expert to figure out the instructions,

It has kept my husband quiet for ages!

Great buy! Resulted in a few quiet evenings with the TV to myself, whilst my husband sat building his boat I bought him for his birthday. Nice and fiddly so the building process lasts a while.

Pass the time, clear your mind!

This came as a gift to a friend who was struggling during lockdown alone. He spent hours reviewing the pieces, taking time to build his own work of art. He went out and bought another one a week after completing this!

Don't buy

This item is being returned as its not fit for purpose. Its tiny and when I say tiny I really mean tiny. Bought this for my dad who usually enjoys doing this sort of thing but when we saw the size knew it was going to be impossible. I have 20 20 vision and need to use a magnifying glass just to see the parts.Instructions are ridiculous too.

More difficult than at first seems

These metal models are quite tricky to build and sadly my efforts fell short of what was needed. Probably my lack of skill, but beware.

Entretenido
