Recommended for apartment / personal use
For +-$50, you get a good deal on a solid, small steel safe. I keep small $$$, passport, birth certificate, SS card, etc...... in it. It is an excellent safe for an apartment/personal use. Can easily fit any 9mm/pistol + ammo in it as well, fyi. This is NOT a safe if you are looking to hide hi-dollar valuables if worried about theft/fire, etc. If someone gets this safe, it is rather easy to break into. Nor, is it fire rated/protected. Below are a few recommendations to add protection at little/no cost.I bolted down both through the base & back into the wall. I used screws that are 1/8" larger in diameter then the ones provided for added bite into the substrates. Also added 2" x 4" wood around the entire exposed perimeter (trim at door to ensure the door can open) to keep pry bars away from being able to easily rip the safe out of its spot. The idea: The harder you make it to steal, the less the thief will try to based on time/noise created. You are going to have to rip off a good chunk of my room to get this sucker out!!!!Oh, and for those that say the keys are an issue to open: Let the key slide in. Do NOT push it in as you try to open the safe. Just let the key lay and turn. I have 0 problems with opening/locking the safe with the keys provided.

Simple, but secure mechanical key safe (3 year update)
I bought this safe as a small, out of sight, mountable security option for my pistols. The key only goes in one way, one side has a little nib on it that prevents it from being inserted incorrectly. It takes a maybe 5 minutes of practice to figure out the proper way to insert the key, it has to go in relatively straight.Other than that, the safe is solidly built for a $40 safe. It has two 1" dead bolts and in internal hinge, door is slightly recessed. It has mount points on the bottom and rear of the unit. I was able to mount the safe using all 4 mounting holes, I do suggest getting some good wall anchors from the hardware store as the plastic ones that come with it are complete junk. I used 100lb drywall anchors and spent around $5 for hardware.Unit comes with a chunk of thin felt like carpet, which is fine for most needs to cover the bottom. My only gripe is that the lock unit visually appears a little fragile, but I have not tested this. Also the keys have small bubbles in the chrome finish at the business end of the key. Hasnt affected performance, but time will tell.............3.5 Year Update....................No issues, still works well. Same key has been used exclusively with no problems or excessive wear..............10 MONTH UPDATE.............0 issues with this safe. I open it a few times a week using the same key. Everything works exactly like it should.

I like it, one star less than 5 because of ...
I like it ,one star less than 5 because of the keys.Yes the keys ,they're light and not attracted to a magnet. So what are they made of ,I ask you?(myself) .Plastic, aluminum .too light for brass!.I wanted a good mechanical lock, rather than an electronic-battery lock, where most likely I would have used just the easy to defeat bypass keys None of these small safes should be used as a stand alone security, however I mounted it INSIDE a Gun security cabinet..Kind of a safe inside a safe. This should slow a professional burglar by another two minutes .not to speak of the little surprise waiting him/her after opening the (Homak) Steel Gun Cabinet.I took the mechanical lock apart from the inside and I learned that breaking off the front plastic key housing will not affect the lock functionality (I didn't actually break it) .So I mounted this safe with 1/4 bolt thru 5/16 holes provided, after drilling thru the steel Gun cabinet (very tough on my drill) .Inside this small safe I even attached a small battery operated led touch light with Velcro two faces strips, Now I can see the contents ,you need a small light because this thing is pitch black. There is enough room for two handguns and spare magazines,or passports and jewelry,or an estimate $200,000.00 in $100.00 bills..For this last one I would need a large donation from Amazon.so I can attest to the accuracy of my statement.Good little safe for the money,I would use as a stand alone only in a locked closet or hidden space. And the keys are still a mystery to me, but they work and they give you a pair.(I wrote the key number down, although I'm sure that if I loose the keys I won't find the number either.)

Very sturdy, secure safe
This is probably the cheapest safe that I have found on amazon that has enough protection to be worth getting. Pretty much all of the safes with keypads in this price range are very easy to break into. The key on this safe is pretty unique, it looks very difficult to pick with standard tools. The bars that hold the door shut seem very sturdy. You would definitely notice if someone broke into this. With the safe properly bolted down, it looks as if the only way in would be prying it open. Not sure how it stands up to being pryed open, but if your not worried about that, it is a great safe. For my purposes it works great.

Solid little safe for the price
I bought this safe to store my revolver handgun and a few boxes of ammo, which it has plenty of room for both. The lock is simple and effective, and the walls of the safe are very durable and won't flex when you push on the sides like some cheap safes and gun lock boxes will. I purposefully bought this safe because of the fact that it does not have a electronic combo lock, which are unreliable. This keeps my kids out of the safe, is easy to hide and bolt into a wall stud, and is a great buy for the price.
