Decent Buildup, Probably Should've Been a TV Series
I honestly enjoyed this movie more than I expected. The worldbuilding was decent and the witch's magical abilities were used in unique ways. The acting was great, with the likes of Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, and Michael Caine. And the pacing was decent, with every downtime scene being used for worldbuilding, allowing the action scenes to exist as just crazy, sword and fantasy fun. The cgi effects don't come into play too often and when they do, they look decent. And it doesn't matter if you're watching the dvd/Blu-ray version as I've watched the DVD version on my 4K UHD television and it still looks great. I would say the movie's biggest problem is the time constraint. There was a lot introduced that felt like it would was being introduced to be fleshed out a later time. It kind of felt like a high budget pilot to a tv series with everything it introduces. I do appreciate that they go about with the main character already being aware of how the world and the magic works. And as viewer I wanted to know more about all of it. Which is why I feel like it was meant to have either a sequel or a tv series following it to do so. Clearly that didn't happen, but despite that, I still feel that the movie alone is enjoyable enough. And it doesn't leave any loose ends with the characters' arcs, so it doesn't feel unfinished, just like as I said, like it was setting up to be a franchise.

... have such an issue with this movie as I enjoyed it thoroughly
Not sure why the critics have such an issue with this movie as I enjoyed it thoroughly. The niche that this movie is trying to fit into (dark fantasy) is a tough one and the movie does an exceptional job of blending action with imagination. If you watch the short animated films that go with this movie and learn more of the backstory, you will see that they did a great job of building a fictional history for the antagonists/protagonists and the characters were given meaning and histories. This isn't an extravagant Peter Jackson LOtR or Hobbit trilogy-type epic and it isn't pretending to be. Nor is this a hack & slash romp like Van Helsing but instead is a well crafted, well acted and very entertaining movie if you have what so many critics seem to be lacking these days...an imagination. The costumes and sets were perfect for the film and the interaction between the main characters (other than a somewhat weak performance by Elijah Wood) were very entertaining to watch. And yes, I grew up in the 70's and early 80's playing D&D so I can see where Vin Diesel is coming from with his character. Here's one viewer that is hoping for a sequel.

Last Witch Hunter
I love the movie. Nice crisp picture. The packaging was great. I love it when the studios put a slipcover over a steelbook.
