Q: How well, on a scale of 1-10, do these work for starting fires?

5 considering normal methods. If you only have sticks, twigs, etc. and a match or lighter is a 10 and using two stick to create friction is a 1, then these around 5. This fresnel will quickly blacken paper but you don't get a flame. You have to create an ember and then use skill, angle, the right tinder and lots of patience to get a fire. I compared these to a 4 inch magnifying glass and the glass was twice as good and easier to focus. I was using various combinations of cotton ball, jute fibers, various cardboard, and dry pine needles. I actually got a fire with the magnifying glass, but I never could duplicate with this fresnel. Note that the 4 inch magnifying glass has 12.6 in2 and these have about 4.8 in2 and the magnifying glass focuses much better. The image quality on these is marginal compared to other larger ones I have, but these do work as a pocket magnifier for reading.

Q: will these fit in a altoids tin?

Nope. One of these will not fit in an Altoids tin unless you remove the lens from its plastic sleeve and then trim the edges to make it smaller.

Q: Anyone know the magnification power of these lenses; ie 5X, 10X... ???

Q: Are these unbreakable

Nothing is unbreakable ... even Kryptonite was stronger than SuperMan. They are made of a strong, yet flexible plastic that is slightly thinner than a credit card, and a little less durable than a credit card. They are strong enough for the service for which they are intended, and priced accordingly. They will start a fire on a sunny day. Dave@Texas
