Last Resort: The Complete Series

The fictional Ohio class nuclear-powered U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado picks up a Seal Team leaving Pakistan after a secret mission there. One of the Seals has been shot. Then the sub receives questionable orders through an old cold war network out of Alaska to nuke Pakistan. During the cold war, this backup was there in case Washington DC was hit and the federal government wiped out.A quick check by the sub reveals that Washington DC is okay, and there is no sign that the United States is under attack, so the Captain and his XO ask for confirmation through the proper Strategic Command network based in Nebraska. The reply is an immediate attack on their sub by another U.S. Navy ship that received orders from the president of the United States to destroy the Colorado.The Colorado did not refuse to fire and kill almost 5 million people in two Pakistani cities. All they did was ask for confirmation through the proper network.The fictional Colorado survives the first attempt to destroy it, but all kinds of challenges and problems beset Captain Marcus Chaplin and his XO Sam Kendal as they struggle to make it out of this mess alive.This TV series begs a question. How obedient should our military forces be to the President of the United States when he gives them an order?Because Captain Marcus and his XO refused to blindly follow a presidential order, they are labeled traitors by the U.S. government and the president sends a kill order to destroy the sub and its entire crew, and there is no shortage of other U.S. Navy ships and their captains that are willing to follow that order without question.During the series, an ignorant crew member accuses the Captain to his face that he is a traitor, because he didn’t blindly obey the president. The captain tells the sailor, and everyone else listening to this confrontation, that the oath for U.S. Military officers says nothing about blindly obeying an order from the president.To make his point, Marcus recites the oath he took when he became a midshipmen: “Having been appointed a midshipman in the United States navy, do you solemnly swear (or affirm that you will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that you will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that you take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that you will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which you are about to enter, so help you God.”The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) also makes it clear that military personnel need to obey the "lawful command of his superior officer," In each case, military personnel have an obligation and a duty to only obey Lawful orders and indeed have an obligation to disobey Unlawful orders, including orders by the president that do not comply with the UCMJ. The moral and legal obligation is to the U.S. Constitution and not to those who would issue unlawful orders, especially if those orders are in direct violation of the Constitution and the UCMJ.In fact, President Donald Trump took a similar oath before he officially became president and he has already broken that oath repeatedly. For instance, instead of defending the 1st Amendment, he attacks the credibility of the free press every chance he gets.It’s also obvious that there are too many real-life American citizens that do not know about these oaths and laws that exist to protect our country and its citizens from corrupt leaders.We now live in dangerous times with a real president that has more than once demonstrated that he wants total obedience and loyalty from everyone in his administration, but Donald Trump is having a hard time getting what he wants and this helps explain why he keeps firing people.Last Resort is worth watching to understand what is at stake in the world we currently live in. How can anyone be a traitor to the United States by questioning and then disobeying what was an allegedly unlawful order? The worst that should have happened was a court martial to determine if the order that was not carried out was in fact, unlawful.And Captain Marcus does demand a court martial several times, but the fictional U.S. President in this TV series doesn’t want that. Instead, that fictional president only wants to destroy the sub and its crew.This is eerily similar to what our current President Donald Trump wants to do with the investigation that special counsel Robert Mueller is conducting over the 2016 election interference by Russia, as Trump repeatedly attacks Mueller’s investigation.In these dangerous times, we can only hope that our military will refuse any allegedly unlawful orders that Donald Trump gives them or any future U.S. President if there is a future.

I'm sure I will like it!!!!

Never got the opportunity to finish this great, if at times super-cheesy, military drama when it originally aired. Loved all that I saw of it, though. When someone recently told me that there is a real finale to the show, I immediately searched for it and found it here for sale/rent. The show is very reasonably priced for the HD option either way. I decided to purchase it outright for rewatches with friends. Very thankful that the show runners were able to truly end it instead of finish out the season on a cliffhanger. Even if it meant rushing some stories.

I have long been a fan of Shawn Ryan, Andre Branagher and Robert Patrick and the three together, in a show, makes for an interesting combination.the show "last resort" is a good show with a great story line. I am a huge fan of shows like MI-5, The Unit, The Shield, and many others, so this is up my alley, so to speak. The political structure storyline about the military industrial complex brings a great angle to a "Mutiny on the Bounty" story makes for an interesting premise. With addition of some aspects of "Lost" (a mysterious tropical isle off the grid) and a little "24" ( political intrigue with men of honor) I am hoping that this show will find it's home on thursday nights and not get cancelled.Do I like it? yes, very much so. Do i think it will find an audience? possible with the Xfiles people, the people that like shows like the aforementioned shows, yes. But TV audiences can be very fickle at times and sometimes the best of shows (Chicago Code comes to mind) can be the victim of bad scheduling. (really exactly how more years can we deal with reality based, talent based shows?) After all, Last Resort asks us to think, to comprehend and to watch not sit back and be passively entertained by overly dramatic, preening 20 somethings who want to be a star.give it a chance people, it's good, it's entertaining and thrilling...not sanjia with a bad hair day.

This show is great. I hadn't seen it, and some snippets from YouTube convinced me to buy it. If you enjoy military dramas, this one is immediately engaging, and worth the few bucks to watch.

This is a well written and well acted show which deals with a fictitious political and military scenario, but while it may be fictitious it is totally believable. Andre Braugher, who plays Captain Marcus Chaplin, give an amazing performance and is at once believable and likable. He exuded a captain-like presence on screen and when faced with the dilemmas and decisions that had to be dealt with both on and off a nuclear sub. This is an ensemble cast which works well together in all aspects. When the show aired on ABC it was up against some pretty stiff competition in its time slot, thus it lasted only one season. If it had been given a chance I believe it could have lasted much longer. That being said, if you happen to "binge watch" a show (which I am prone to do) you might find this one a great find--one season vs say 5+. The fact that it is only one season and that it goes to its conclusion while staying true to its essence is appealing. Kudos to Scott Speedman, Daisy Betts, Camille De Pazzis, Dichen Lachman, Daniel Lissing, Sahr Ngaujah and the rest of this amazing cast for a job well done!

Nach dem Ende der langjährigen Kult-Serie LOST (2004 -2010) war der amerikanische TV-Sender ABC auf der Suche nach einem würdigen Ersatz für diese Show. Als Favorit dafür kristallisierte sich die Idee von Shawn Ryan und Karl Gajdusek heraus, die mit ihrer Geschichte über einen U-Boot Kommandanten, der in Friedenszeiten den Befehl verweigert Atomraketen auf Pakistan abzuschießen und dadurch selbst ins Visier einer Verschwörung gerät, sich mit seinem U-Boot zu einer kleinen asiatische Insel zurückzieht und von dort aus mit seinen Raketen die Machthaber in den Staaten in Schach hält. Shawn Ryan hatte zuvor bereits die langjährige Erfolgsserie THE SHIELD (2002 - 2008) ersonnen und war ebenfalls für die Action-Serie THE UNIT - EINE FRAGE DER EHRE (2006 - 2009) verantwortlich. Drehbuchautor Karl Gajdusek hatte gerade mit seiner Vorlage zu TRESPASS - AUF LEBEN UND TOD von sich Reden gemacht, einem Thriller, der mit Nicholas Cage und Nicole Kidman in den Hauptrollen von Regisseur Joel Schumacher eindrucksvoll inszeniert wurde. In seiner Struktur erinnert LAST RESORT stark an die brillante und viel zu früh abgesetzte TV-Serie JERICHO - DER ANSCHLAG (2006 - 2008), die die Auslösung von Atombomben in verschiedenen Großstädten der USA zum Thema hat. Auch in LAST RESORT geht es um eine politische Verschwörung gigantischen Ausmaßes, wobei die Verschwörer in den höchsten Zirkeln der Macht sitzen müssen, denn wie sonst könnte ein Befehl einen verbündeten Staat mit Atomwaffen anzugreifen durchgesetzt werden?Genau dieser Punkt lässt jedoch nicht nur die Zuschauer erschaudern, sondern auch höchste Militärs und Politiker, die angesichts der vorliegenden Fakten die Realität verdrängen und sich lieber wegducken anstelle Zivilcourage zu zeigen wie einst Graf Staufenberg und seine Mitstreiter in der unheilvollen NS-Zeit. Es sind gerade die Parallelen, die sich hier zeigen und unheilvoll aufzeigen wie schnell die Welt wieder an den Abgrund gelangt, die dieser Serien einen düsteren Reiz verleiht. Die Eröffnungsszene einer Gruppe von Männern, die mit einem kleinen Motorboot über das offene Meer fliehen und dort aufgelesen werden sollen ist für das amerikanische Militär reine Routine, doch der folgende Befehl ist für U-Boot Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) alles andere als Routine. Über einen geheimen Kanal erhält dieser den Befehl Atomraketen gegen Pakistan abzuschießen. Da dieser Befehl über reguläre Kanäle nicht verifiziert und bestätigt wird verweigert Chaplin den Befehl und auch der XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman), sein erster Offizier, der daraufhin zum Captain ernannt wird, verweigert den Befehl. Eine Befehlsverweigerung beim Militär ist in der Regel undenkbar und wird auf das härteste bestraft, doch das eigene U-Boot daraufhin mit Raketen zu beschießen zeigt, dass hier mehr auf dem Spiel steht. Chaplin schafft es sich mit seinem U-Boot in die Bucht einer kleinen Insel zu retten und um seinen Gegnern zu demonstrieren wie ernst er die Sicherheit der Insel und seiner Crew nimmt schießt dieser eine Atomrakete gegen Washington ab. Auch als die Rakete 200 km vor Washington im Meer explodiert wird Chaplin mit dieser Tat Staatsfeind Nr. 1. Als dieser die Öffentlichkeit mit seiner Darstellung der Geschehnisse informiert wird Chaplin mit seinem U-Boot endgültig zu einer Schachfigur auf dem Brett der Weltpolitik. Doch seine Befehlsverweigerung zersetzt auch die Moral der Mannschaft, die nicht wahrhaben will, dass sie längst für höhere Interessen geopfert wurden. Sabotage und Meuterei sind nur ein Teil der täglich weiter außer Kontrolle geratenen Situation, denn auch die CIA hat einen Spion auf Chaplins Schiff platziert, der anfängt Chaplins Vorkehrungen zu unterlaufen. Ebenso wie sich die Verhältnisse auf der Insel immer schneller und tiefgreifender zuspitzen, eskaliert auch die Lage in den USA, wo die Verschwörer einen totalitären Staat zu errichten suchen und kritische Stimmen mehr und mehr verstummen.Ryan und Gajdusek haben ein düsteres Szenario entworfen, das neben vielen Action-Momenten und dem offensichtlichen Thrill der Verschwörung auch viele dramatische Passagen enthält. Für die aufwändige Produktion wurde eine Reihe hochkarätige Regisseure verpflichtet, unter denen besonders Martin Campbell hervorsticht. Campell, der die beiden James Bond Filme GOLDENEYE (1995) und CASINO ROYAL (2006), sowie die beiden Zorro Verfilmungen DIE MASKE DES ZORRO (1998) und DIE LEGENDE DES ZORRO (2005) inszenierte zeichnet für den ausgezeichneten Pilot verantwortlich, der die Messlatte für diese Serie sofort sehr hoch legt. Andere Episoden wurden beispielsweise von der Oscar nominierten Regisseurin Lesli Linka Glatter (Tales of Meeting and Painting, 1985) oder Kevin Hooks (Passagier 57, 1992) gedreht. Doch trotz zusätzlich hochkarätiger Schauspieler wie Andre Braugher (Stadt der Engel, 1998; Poseidon, 2006), Scott Speedman (Underworld, 2003; The Strangers, 2008), Robert Patrick (Terminator II - Tag der Abrechnung, 1991; Akte X, TV-Serie 2000 - 2002) und dem Oscar nominierten Bruce Davison (Freundschaft fürs Leben, 1989; X-Men, 2000), sowie einer Reihe an bekannten TV-Stars wie Autumn Reeser (O.C., California, TV-Serie 2005 - 2007), Daisy Betts (Out oft he Blue, TV-Serie 2008), Dichen Lachman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., TV-Serie 2014/2015; Jurassic World: Dominion, 2021) oder Jessy Schram (Nashville, TV-Serie 2015/2016) konnte die Show das amerikanische Publikum nicht für sich gewinnen, weshalb der produzierende Sender ABC schon bald ein frühzeitiges Aus beschlossen hatte. ABC wollte der Serie jedoch ein abschließendes Ende geben, weshalb die letzte Folge noch einmal umgeschrieben wurde und man nun die verschiedenen Erzählstränge aufgelöst hat. Es liegt jedoch in der Natur der Sache, dass eine ursprünglich groß angelegte Serie im Verlauf der vorangegangenen Episoden ebenso ihr Eigenleben entwickelt hat wie viele der Charaktere in der Serie. Die Anweisung die Serie zu stoppen und zu einem Ende zu bringen lässt manch vorher angedachte Idee verpuffen und gerade im Charakter des XO führen die mehrfachen emotionalen Richtungsänderungen zu einigen Irritationen. Unter dem Strich bleibt eine hochklassige Actionserie, die jedoch ihr Potenzial nicht vollständig ausschöpfen konnte.Die DVD-Veröffentlichung durch Sony kann nur als vorbildlich bezeichnet werden. Die 13 Episoden sowie umfangreiches Bonusmaterial wurden auf drei DVD-Scheiben gepresst, die Platz sparend in einer DVD-Hülle untergebracht sind. Da die Serie in HD gedreht wurde ist das Bild ohne Einschränkungen sehr gut. Das Bild Format ist 1,78:1 (16:9). Als Sprach Optionen gibt es Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch, dazu noch eine Reihe von Sprachoptionen bei den Untertiteln wie Deutsch, Englisch, Arabisch, Französisch, Griechisch, Holländisch, Portugiesisch, Rumänisch und Türkisch. Ein besonderes Extra ist zudem eine kurze inhaltliche Zusammenfassung der einzelnen Episoden auf der Rückseite des Covers. Somit ist dies eine Top-Veröffentlichung einer vielschichtigen, spanenden und äußerst temporeichen TV-Serie.
