Actually, if you wire it to the positive batter side, you will have power all the time. The issue with this setup is if you leave something plugged in all the time it could drain your batter to the point that it won't start your car. Best to have this wired to the ignition on source.

Unless the battery is being constantly charged, then it would drain the battery. I would turn it off when not using it.

I have mine wired thru an accessory switch just to be safe. The battery is a marine starting battery. The few times I have left the switch on for a few days, it did not drain the battery. I'm sure it will over a long period of time. Depending on the battery on what that time range will be.
